چکیده

Abstract The anadromous alewife is a commercially fished clupeid in Atlantic Canada, whose oceanic migration poorly understood. Migration of alewives presently investigated from the lower reaches Gaspereau River into Minas Basin, Bay Fundy. Seventy-five post-spawning adults were tagged on their downstream migration; within two days being tagged, most had left and 57 entered Southern Bight Basin. Thirty-one detected Passage average time tagging to final detection was 28 with standard deviation 11 days. None until day 20 after start tagging. After 20, residence timescale Basin only 8.8 95% CI 8.4–9.3 Fast tidal currents prevail much study area, travelled many large excursions Passage. Separation distances between pairs increased greatly indicating mixing over area. Offshore movement associated seasonal warming, moving down spatial temperature gradient deeper waters. Offshore, larger displacements widely dispersed through During transit River, 18 ± 2 lost corroborating evidence mortality for 4 these. By apparent ? 10 alewives. Individual observed make transits during migration, where they may become exposed in-stream turbines.

Genetic Divergence between Freshwater and Marine Morphs of Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus): A ‘Next-Generation’ Sequencing Analysis

Alewife Alosa pseudoharengus, a small clupeid fish native to Atlantic Ocean, has recently (∼150 years ago) invaded the North American Great Lakes and despite challenges of freshwater environment its populations exploded and disrupted local food web structures. This range expansion has been accompanied by dramatic changes at all levels of organization. Growth rates, size at maturation, or fecund...

Beta-thymosin gene polymorphism associated with freshwater invasiveness of alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus).

Predicting the success of a species' colonization into a novel environment is routinely considered to be predicated on niche-space similarity and vacancy, as well as propagule pressure. The role genomic variation plays in colonization success (and the interaction with environment) may be suggested, but has not rigorously been documented. To test an hypothesis that previously observed ecotype-sp...

Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) density as a predictor of open water utilization by walleye (Sander vitreus) in Otsego Lake, NY

Walleye (Sander vitreus) are typically associated with shoals, drop offs, or in aquatic vegetation near shore (Foust and Haynes 2007), while in some lakes and reservoirs walleye make more use of pelagic waters (Ager 1976; Festa 1987; Palmer 2005, Byrne et al. 2009). Walleye have been stocked at a target rate of 80,000/year from 2000-2006 and 40,000/year since 2007. Here, walleye occupy rocky sh...

Spatial attachment-site preferences of macroectoparasites on Atlantic sturgeons Acipenser oxyrinchus in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, Canada.

Although parasite habitat preference is well studied, it is rarely rigorously evaluated statistically because of many zero intensities. Attachment-site preference and intensities of 2 macroectoparasite species ( Caligus elongatus and Calliobdella vivida ) of Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus Mitchill, in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy, Canada, were characterized with the use of zero-inflated n...
